I spent my time with Arise New Day an amazing school providing more than just teachers but role models for a new generation of thinkers and dreamers.
This first image was taken inside of one of those classrooms teaching students basic computer skills.
Many students at Arise Academy participate in various extra curricular activities including Martial Arts Training, dance and much more. This gives students more than just exercise but discipline and meditation.
Arise prides itself on having a diverse group of teachers mentoring and leading their students. An estimated half of Arise’s teachers are experienced African American NOLA instructors. Frequent workshops are held for teachers on what it means to be a child of color in NOLA. 97% of students at Arise Academy are black hence the demand for a diverse leadership team. Here is one such leader teaching her class of kindergarteners.
Students line up for lunch Arise New Day. Most of Arise’s roughly 500 students come from low-income families. More than 95 percent are eligible for free lunch. That’s why Arise serves three meals a day and recently added supper with the help of a food bank.
Arise Academy was founded in 2009 and is located In the 9th ward at the edge of a largely black working-class neighborhood.
After Hurricane Katrina NOLAs public school system was put to the test to see what could be done for its youth. Many activists found post Katrina to be a good time to start fostering the charter school system.
Arise uses its location to connect to local community organizations all around their school. Some students learn dance at a nearby dance studio Dancing Grounds during physical education time.
Students play around after school with blankets their teachers provide for cold classrooms.
All charter schools after Katrina were officially classified as open-enrollment schools. They must accept any child, regardless of neighborhood or ability, so long as there’s an available seat. Cheers for accepting all students Arise New Day
